Quayside at Whitby

This is a preliminary pencil sketch for a proposed watercolour of the quayside at Whitby. The aim is to try and apply discipline during painting to keep the background much reduced to create a feeling of distance and not be tempted by including too much detail. The sketch gives an idea of this by showing the quayside buildings in a much reduced outline without the detail. It is always easy to include too much detail when working from a photographic reference. In the end it comes down to self discipline.
